Department of Alta Verapaz

Alta Verapaz is a department located at the north of the Guatemala. The capital and main city of the department are Cobán. Verapaz is surrounded in north by the Département of Petén, in the east by the Département of Izabal, in the south by the departments of Zacapa, El Progreso, and of Baja Verapaz, and finally in the west by the Départment d' El Quiché.

Alta Verapaz habrite the natural reserve Mario Dary , protecting fauna and the flora from the area, and in particular the national bird of Guatemala, now threatened, the resplendent Quetzal. One finds, in Alta Verapaz, the towns of San Pedro Carchá and San Cristóbal Verapaz.

History

At the time précolombienne the area belonged to the empire Maya. When the Conquistador S Spanish arrived in the years 1520, they conquérirent the plates in the center and the south of Guatemala, but were pushed back in this area by a wild resistance of the inhabitants of then. The Spanish missionaries asked for the permission then of convert peacefully the inhabitants with the Christianisme, which they made a success of. From there the name comes from the area, " Verapaz" meaning " True paix" in Spanish. Once converted, it fell under control from the king from Spain, without confrontations. With the XIXe century, it became an important producing area of Café.
