Fruitfulness by department

The median number of children per woman or index of the economic situation of fruitfulness evolved/moved as follows for each department and the whole of the Poitou-Charentes area:

From the point of view of fruitfulness the area seems a zone of transition between on the one hand the very fertile Countries of the Loire, and on the other hand the Aquitaine-Limousin, areas far from fertile. Thus Two-Sevres have a behavior identical to the Vendée and Anjou very close. The department appears in full health demographic and present even a mini-baby-boom. It approaches from now on threshold renewal of the generations located at a fertility rate of 2,07 for France.

Vienna on the other hand seems to be inserted in the fall in the birth rate like the close Limousin, and its population would even plunge, if there were not a strong immigration related to the great dynamism of its metropolis, Poitiers. Already very poor vis-a-vis the French average, the fruitfulness of the department on the whole did not progress of a iota during the period, and seems to move away more and more from the national average. But this can change the following years perfectly.

A good news for the anxious natalists for the future of the area: in 2003-2004, the indicator of the economic situation of fruitfulness reached already 1,79, and in 2005, fruitfulness exceeded the threshold of the 1,8 children per woman.

Ages of the population

On the whole, at the time of the census of 1999,23,8% of the population of the Poitou-Charentes had less than 25 years.

More clearly with darkest:

  • between 16,1 and 22,8% of the population has less than 25 years;
  • between 22,8 and 26,4% of the population has less than 25 years;
  • between 29,7 and 33% of the population has less than 25 years;
  • between 33 and 44,9% of the population has less than 25 years;

Rather vast zones are given up by the sections of old young people (South-east of Vienna, North and Southern Charente, major part of Two-Sevres), which concentrate in the agglomerations:

  • rather distant Poitiers and its surroundings, which has an important university
  • La Rochelle, Fouras, Angouleme and Niort, which offers more opportunities employment than the countryside.

On the contrary, the pensioners concentrate in the quoted rural areas (Southern Vienna, North and Southern Charente); to note however that the coast royannaise and the islands of Oléron and Ré are also very gravitational for the pensioners.

Active population

In the area, the three types of zones whose big part of the population works in the commune of residence are:

  • very rural areas (south-east of Vienna, Southern Vienna and Nord of Charentes, some cantons of Two-Sevres): they are farmers who thus reside in the commune of their exploitation;
  • tourist areas: Ile de Ré, island of Oléron, cantons of Marenne oyster and Saujon: there still, the structure of the active population (turned towards the trade and tourism) explains why many inhabitants work near their residence;
  • finally, urban centres (Poitiers, Châtellerault; Niort, Thouars, Bressuire, Saint-Maixent; Holy La Rochelle, Royan, Rochefort, ; Cognac, Angouleme, Barbezieux and Confolens).

Around these urban areas and basin of employment which they represent (except for Bressuire, Royan, Rochefort and Barbezieux, and to a lesser extent for Confolens and Cognac), of the rather vast zones is inhabited by a population having, with more than 75%, its employment in another commune. It is the phenomenon of Rurbanisation.

Gravitational zones

This chart shows the principal zones of attraction of the area. Those draw the suburbs of the urban centres: Poitiers, La Rochelle, Niort, and to a lesser extent, common close relations of Angouleme and Thouars. All these cities have an attraction quite less than their periphery, and are even repulsive: only the center of Poitiers and the La Rochelle know a growth.

The new fact for twenty years, compared to the growth of the close suburbs at the time of the Sixties and Seventies, has been the displacement of this growth in increasingly distant periphery (rurbanisation).

Lastly, Royan knows a strong growth related to tourism.

Foreigners and immigrants

An immigrant is somebody residing in France, born foreigner abroad. He can have kept his foreign nationality or to be become French by acquisition. On the other hand the group from abroad is consisted the whole of the residents having a foreign nationality, which they were born in France or out of France. The French of birth born out of France are not immigrants.

Note:

the code of French nationality declares that any person born of at least a French relative is French with the birth (by filiation). Is also French with the birth, any person born in France of at least a relative himself born in France (double right of the ground). Thus any child from abroad born itself in France is French full.

the newborns in France of foreign parents born both abroad are thus foreign, but become French full at 18 years, if they reside there and resided at it in a continuous or discontinuous way during five years since age the 11 years and if they do not wish to preserve their nationality of origin. However the 16 year old minor accomplished can make the request for acquisition anticipated of nationality without the agreement of his parents and under the same conditions of duration of residence in France during five years since the 11 years age. Moreover, as of the 13 years age, the parents can ask for French nationality for their child, with his agreement, in condition of having resided five years in France since the 8 years age.

Many immigrants and from abroad in Poitou-Charentes

Principal characteristics and distribution of the immigrants

On 52.865 immigrants, nearly 14.000 arrived in the area since January 1999. Whereas the immigrant population originating in Tunisia and Spain decreases, one witnesses a strong progression of the number of the immigrants from Europe, mainly of the United Kingdom. The Portuguese who were most numerous up to now in the area are now preceded by the British. The British and the Portuguese set up the two most groups within immigration in the area. On 11.600 immigrants come from the United Kingdom, more half indeed arrived in the area since less than 5 years. On the other hand, for more half of the 8.300 natives of Portugal, the migration was done there is more than 30 years.

Following the important recent immigration of the British, nearly 10% of those of them which reside in France find from now on in Poitou-Charentes. The age structure and the motivations to come to live in France are extremely different for two nationalities. The large majority of the Portuguese, generally come young to France, have still the age to be active, while the British nationals are older. Among the last made British (on less than five years since 1999), 30% have more than 60 years and 25% have between 50 and 59 years, which makes this immigration mainly a migration of pensioners.

On the whole, nearly 20.000 immigrants acquired French nationality, that is to say 37,5% of the total immigrant population of the area (against 40% on average for the metropolis). The older and made British mainly recently, are rare to have made this step.

Distribution of the births by nationality of the mother

The following figures are provided by INSEE for the year 2004 :

It is noticed that a vast majority of the births take place out-marriage. It is not true for the foreign mothers, but the proportion of these births among them is a little higher than in the whole of the metropolis (29% out-marriage in Poitou-Charentes against 27% for the whole metropolis).

The number of births of foreign mother is extremely marginal in the area, this following the weakness of manpower from abroad and with the advanced Middle Age of those, since the manpower of the two most important groups of them (British and Portuguese) are growing old populations.

Marriages

In 2004, one recorded 6.556 marriages in Poitou-Charentes area, of which:

  • 5.920 between two joint French
  • 78 between foreign couple
  • 238 mixed marriages between French husband and foreign wife
  • 320 mixed marriages between French wife and foreign husband

Separately the British group at the same time relatively old and arrived too recently, the foreign population thus seems to be melted gradually in the population poitevine, since on 714 joint foreigners implied in the total of the marriages, 558 (that is to say nearly 78%) were it in mixed marriages (71% for the totality of the metropolis).

Ventilation of the mixed marriages

Source: .

The mixed marriages French-foreigners are important to observe. It is indeed about one of the principal indicators of integration of the foreign populations, with the number of acquisitions of nationality.
