Demography of the Midday-Pyrenees
At January 1st 2006, the number of inhabitants of the area the Midday-Pyrenees was estimated at 2 755 000 inhabitants, is more or less 4,4% of the population of the Metropolitan France. The demographic growth rate of the area is one of highest of France. It is above all due to migratory balance (+ 1,00% per annum since 1999), the natural balance being very weak (+ 0,12% annually).
Evolution of the population
Source: INSEE and IAURIF.
The population growth increases with the wire of the last decades. Between 1990 and 1999, the population grew of 119 000 inhabitants (more or less 13 000 per annum), but of 1999 to 2006, the growth was of some 205 000 people is 29 000 on average per annum, more of the double that at the time of the Nineties. Under the effect of an important especially interregional migration, the progression thus more than doubled. And the department of Haute-Garonne, with Toulouse as chief town cut the lions share: close to 112 000 new residents in seven years or 11% moreover, is an average of 16 000 per annum. It is one of the highest progressions of metropolis.
To also note the very strong performance of the Tarn-et-Garonne which gains more 13 000 inhabitants of 1999 to 2005, like those of the Batch and Ariège which gain 8  respectively; 000 and 9 000 inhabitants over same the 6 years period, and leave thus finally their long spiral of decrease. Finally the Tarn, on which extends from now on part of the urban surface of Toulouse, progresses of more than 19 000 inhabitants in six years, which propels it in the leading bunch of the most dynamic departments of France. The remainder of the area (Aveyron, Gers and Hautes-Pyrénées) experiences a a little less development though often extremely positive.
By examining in detail the demographic chart of the area, one notes that the essence of the increase in population concentrates along a North-South axis which goes from Brive-the-Strapping woman in Corrèze, until Foix in Ariège, more or less along the trunk road n° 20 (Paris-Barcelona).
Natural movement of the population
Births and death by department
Provided figures by INSEE -.
Only the Tarn-et-Garonne and especially the Haute-Garonne have a positive natural balance. This one is extremely important in Haute-Garonne, related to the relative youth of this department. On the other hand in the six other departments, negative balance is sometimes very important (except the Tarn) and would lead to an accelerated collapse of the population, if there were not immigration to reverse the tendency.
Fruitfulness by department
From 1999 to 2003, the median number of children per woman or index of the economic situation of fruitfulness was the following, for each department and the whole of the area:

Foreign immigration
-
Note:
- By immigrant one hears somebody residing in France, born foreigner abroad. He can be become French by acquisition or have kept his foreign nationality. On the other hand the group from abroad is consisted the whole of the residents having a foreign nationality, which they were born in France or out of France. Let us recall that the newborns in France of foreign parents are foreign, but become French full at 18 years, if they reside there and resided at it in a continuous or discontinuous way during five years since age the 11 years and if they do not wish to preserve their nationality of origin. However, as of the 13 years age, the parents can ask for French nationality for their child, with his agreement (under condition of having resided five years in France since the 8 years age). Moreover minor the 16 year old accomplished can make the request for acquisition anticipated of nationality without the agreement of his/her parents and under the same conditions of duration of residence in France during five years since the 11 years age.

Interregional migrations
The growth and the demographic dynamism of the area rest primarily on immigration. The natural surplus is very weak (+ 0,12% on average annual between 1999 and 2004 compared with + 0,4% of national average. Only the departments of Tarn-et-Garonne and Haute-Garonne post a surplus of the births on the deaths. The population growth, more considerable since 1999 than during the years 1990, results, as during the previous decade, of arrivals much more than of departures. This migratory contribution was accentuated, passing from 11.000 migrants per annum in average between 1990 and 1999 to 16.000 migrants annually since then.
In fact one notes that flows of entry and exit with the other French areas progressed in the two directions, but the arrivals in Midday-Pyrenees area increased more than the departures, which involved a rise of the migratory surplus of the area. On the whole, because of intensity of these migratory movements, the newcomers since 1999 of more than 4 years (including coming from the DOM-TOM and from abroad), represent in 2004 nearly 11% of the population of the area. If this situation owed perdurer one would witness an almost total renewal of the population from here the year 2050, at least in the zones of strong immigration (North-South axis: Batch, the Tarn-and-Garonne-High-Garonne and partially Ariège).
Principal flows of interregional immigration
The following figures concern the migrants of 5 years old metropolis and more, between on January 1st, 1999 and on January 1st, 2004, i.e. over one five years period.
The newcomers are young (70% have less than 40 years, against only 45% for the totality of the regional population). They are also much more graduate. Indeed, 41% of the adults are graduate higher education, whereas this figure is only of 22% for the total population of the area. Thanks to that, population of the Midday-Pyrenees east from now on more graduate than the national average.
Analyzes by age of the migrants
The immigrants (interregional and international) are much younger than the average population of the area, and the number of the young people tends to increase between the periods 1990-1999 and 1999-2004:
-
Reading of this table:
- during the period 1999-2004, for 10.000 old inhabitants of the Midday-Pyrenees from 20 to 29 years, there were annually 81 immigrants of this age bracket (20-29). During the same period, always for 10.000 people of this age bracket, there were annually only 3 immigrants in Aquitaine and 21 in Languedoc-Roussillon.
It is noted immediately that Languedoc-Roussillon receives much more elderly (pensioners come to pass an end-of-life under the sun) and Aquitaine receives much less young graduates from 20 to 29 years.
Marriages
In 2004, one recorded 11.038 marriages in Midday-Pyrenees area, of which:
- 9.332 between two joint French
- 236 between foreign couple
- 664 mixed marriages between French husband and foreign wife
- 806 mixed marriages between French wife and foreign husband
One attends like everywhere in France generalized an enough mixture of population French and foreign, since on 1.942 joint foreigners having contracted marriage, 1.470 (that is to say more or less 75%) had done it in mixed marriages (against 71% for the whole of the metropolis).

Principal urban surfaces
The following populations are calculated according to the territory of the urban surfaces in their extension defined at the time of the census of 1999.
Contrary to its neighbors the Aquitanian and the Languedoc-Roussillon, only one big city, Toulouse, dominates without division the urban landscape of the area. From 1990 to 1999, the Midday-Pyrenees had progressed of 119 194 inhabitants, and Toulouse granted 123  of it; 645, that is to say more than totality. However the other urban surfaces knew they also a development sometimes extremely significant (Montauban, Rodez, Pamiers, Cahors, Albi). The urbanization thus progressed and the rural areas continued to be depopulated. To note the continuous decrease urban surfaces of Doors and Mazamet throughout the period. Finally for Decazeville, it is about a true collapse.
More recent semi-official figures exist for the Toulouse surface: the population would have passed to 1.117.000 at the beginning of January 2007 (estimate INSEE and AUAT). The situation develops quickly following the demographic boom of the area noted since 1999.
