Demography of Picardy

At January 1st 2006, the number of inhabitants of the area of Picardy was estimated at 1  886  000 inhabitants, is 3,2% of the population of the Metropolitan France. The demographic growth rate of the area is one of weakest country (+ 0,22% per annum since 1999), and this in spite of the fruitfulness of the Picardy women which exceeds 2 children since 2005, made extremely rare in Europe. The modest increase in the population of the area is completely due to the natural balance (+ 0,44% per annum), migratory balance being negative (- 0,22% annually).

Evolution of the population

Sources: INSEE and IAURIF.

In spite of a natural balance always largely positive, since 1990, the population growth of the area clearly slowed down, being given the strong emigration which strikes it. Only the department of Oise still really progresses. This is due to its proximity with the Ile-de-France. The southernmost part of the department indeed forms part of the crown périurbaine of the urban surface of Paris, and collects the benefit of the continual spreading out of the latter. In other words, it is the only part of Picardy which is a zone of immigration.

Natural movement of the population

Evolution of the births and the deaths

The following figures are provided by INSEE -.

Fruitfulness by department

The median number of children per woman or index of the economic situation of fruitfulness evolved/moved as follows for each department and the whole of Picardy:

Picardy is with the area of the Pays of the Loire the most fertile area of France. Two departments out of three have a fertility rate higher than 2 (Aisne and Oise), which wants to say that the women have there on average more than two children, fact become extremely rare in Europe. The department of the Sum however does not follow the movement, since the low fruitfulness of the agglomeration of Amiens car the department downwards. Following what, the area had not exceeded yet the bar of the two births per woman in 2003.

The data of fruitfulness after 2003 are unfortunately extremely fragmentary. INSEE reveals however that in 2005, the fruitfulness of Picardy finally exceeded the threshold of the fertility rate of 2,0, just as 4 other areas, with at the head the Countries of the Loire. It is about the Nord-Pas-de-Calais, of Picardy, of the Franche-Comté and of the Center area. Picardy would keep its place thus at the head the most fertile areas of the country.

Distribution of the births by nationality of the mother

The following figures are provided by INSEE for the year 2004 :

The births out-marriage are largely majority in the area, but only for the mothers of French nationality. On the other hand at the foreign ones, it is completely the reverse, and especially at the women of Moslem tradition. The births of foreign mother constitute only 6,2% of the total, against nearly 12% for the whole of the metropolis. These births of foreign mother are however rather numerous proportionally at the height small number from abroad (3,5% of the population of the area)

Immigrants and foreigners

By immigrant one understands somebody residing in France, born foreigner abroad. He can be become French by acquisition or have kept his foreign nationality. On the other hand the group from abroad is consisted the whole of the residents having a foreign nationality, which they were born in France or out of France.

Many foreigners and of immigrants in Picardy

With the census of 1999, the foreigners and the immigrants divided themselves as follows in France and Picardy area:

Let us note that in Picardy the number of immigrants regularly dropped since 1982, passing from 87  010 in 1975 with 81  156 in 1999.

The distribution of the immigrants in Picardy by continent of origin is rather similar to that of the whole of the metropolis, except for Asian out-Turkey, definitely fewer than elsewhere. This is compensated by a proportion a little higher Europeans. Among the latter however one notes a relatively high number of Portuguese, Belgians (proximity) and Germans, compensated by a number definitely lower of Italian and Spanish immigrants. Those set up two groups strong " vieilli" immigrants, being given the already old average date of their arrival in France.

Principal urban surfaces

The following populations refer to the urban surfaces in their extension defined at the time of the census of 1999.

The urban surface of Paris is posted on a purely informative basis, since it overflows rather largely on the southern part of Picardy (Oise). For the remainder, one notices the good behavior of the urban surfaces close to the capital, located at the south of the area, and particularly Compiegne, Clermont, Beauvais and Castle-Thierry. On the remainder of the territory, only Amiens progresses a little. The industrial old cities like Saint-Quentin, Tergnier and Chauny are in clear decrease.
