Demography of Cameroun

The 250 estimated ethnicities of the Cameroun form five great cultural areas:

  • the plates of the west, including the Bamiléké, Bamoun (or Bamun) and other groups in the North-West
  • the people of the coastal tropical forests, including the Based, Douala (or Duala) and other entities of south-west
  • the tropical forests of the south including the Beti (or Pahouins), Boulou, Ewondo and Fang (under groups of Béti-Pahouin) and the Pygmy S Baka
  • of the Moslem people in the semi-arid areas of north (the the Sahel) and the central grounds including the Peuls (or Fulani or Fulbé)
  • the Kirdi, not Moslems or recently Islamized in the desert of north and the central grounds.

Ethnos groups

It is difficult to include/understand the country without including/understanding ethnic cutting and their relations.

Ethnic independent groups:

Religions

  • Catholic: 34,7%

  • traditional Religions: 26%
  • Moslem: 20%
  • Protestant: 17,5%

Cameroun can be quoted like example of religious cohabitation, since there does not exist almost any friction between the various religious communities which live completely in peace.

This extreme tolerance of the population makes the bed of several sects which thrive in the country.

Émi-immigration

Many Cameronians live abroad and represent a considerable contribution of currencies for the country. ONG Solutions with the clandestine migrations (SMIC), in partnership with the EU, estimates at the approximately 200.000 Cameronians who try each year to emigrate in Europe by the road.

In 1999: 26890 Cameronians lived in France in a regular way (out double nationals) according to the INED. These figures are in constant rise.
The number of French living in Cameroun knew a regular fall. Thus, in 1995: 6385 French lived in Cameroun, against: 6024 in 2004, is one of the heavy falls of the number of French abroad for a country.

According to certain sources, it there would have up to three million foreigners in Cameroun, that is to say 20% of the population, mainly Nigerians and Chadians, without-papers for the majority, taking into account the cost of the regularization. This is why massive departures from abroad are organized, such as for example, on August 20th, 2006, the departure of: 3000 Nigerians.

Following the tripartite signature of agreements between the Office of the High Commission of the United Nations for the refugees, Cameroun and Nigeria, of the returns of Réfugié S Nigerians to Cameroun are organized. However, certain returns make following the voluntary programme of repatriation in favor of the Nigerians living in Cameroun, elaborate in 2004, because the price of the residence permits can represent several months of wages, which condemns much from abroad to clandestinity or the return. It is in this program that the departure was registered of: 3000 Nigerians of Cameroun in August 2006. Each volunteer with the return obtained in against part a sum of: 400000FCFA poured by the federal government of Nigeria. The general consul of Nigeria in Cameroun, Gordon Harry Bristol-board, however noted that some often use this sum to be started again in Cameroun.

Many foreigners complain about discriminations. Thus, for example, of the restrictions are brought to the access to the land and buildings from abroad.

In addition, the Cameronian government has implemented for several years a plan of “camerounisation” of employment. This policy aims at preferring the nationals with the foreign workers by requiring the latter which they obtain an authorization, precondition to any community activity. This measurement is useful, according to the government, to preserve employment for the local population. Thus certain professions are prohibited the abroads.
