Dark Chronicle is a video game of role mixing action and ventures. Developed by Level-5, it left on PlayStation 2 in 2003.

History of the development

Its predecessor is Dark Cloud , Dark Chronicle is not one following properly speaking, but the majority of the elements of the Gameplay were taken again and improved.

Scenario

Palm Brinks is a quiet city but no inhabitant has the right to leave there. Why? Nobody speaks about it, the inhabitants are not worried any and live normally. Maximilien, inventive apprentice and inhabitant of Palm Brinks, would like to find his/her mother who disappeared when it was young. He saw a banal life until the day when a Cirque makes a representation downtown…

Gameplay

After some adventures Maximilien obtains a robot built by its professor, then, with the wire of the adventure, Monica joint with him. These three characters (four when Monica learns how to change) can be directed constantly, one by one. Moreover Monica has several transformations which one obtains by beating ceratains monsters in a special way.

Construction

The system of construction, taken again of Dark Cloud, makes it possible to build where the player wants it in the devastated cities. The vision is here with the third nobody.

Maximilien, thanks to its stone (red), can take along its team 100 years in the future. As for Monica, thanks to its stone (blue), can make the voyage in opposite direction, i.e. 100 years in the past. It is thus possible to see the evolution of the cities in the future according to the modifications made in the present.

Each object (dwelling, bench, river,…) can be built when the player recovered an adequate gem (called Geopierre), as well as materials necessary (piece of wood, bars metal,…) The materials as well as the gems are in general had by the monsters in the neighborhoods of the cities.

Engagements

There exists any kind of monsters to the periphery of the cities, distributed in several levels. A small transparent chart can be posted at the request of the player. The phases of combat proceed with a Vision cinema. Objects of attack such as bombs, as of the objects cancelling of the special states such as the antidote which cures poison, can be used in full combat. A gauge of life measures the wounds of the character, arrival with 0 it dies, if all the characters died, the part is finished. Various objects such as the bread make it possible to recover life. With the same principle, a gauge for each weapon represents its state of solidity, arrival with 0, the weapon is broken.

Evolution

Each killed monster gives money, experiment and sometimes an object. These points of experiment make it possible to improve the weapons of the characters. When the gauge of experiment of a weapon is full, it is possible to amalgamate it with crystals found by the player. This fusion makes it possible to improve the weapon according to the speciality of the crystal (fire, ice, solidity, mass, cyclone,…) After improvebeing improved, if the weapon meets certain conditions (it is necessary sometimes to have killed certain monsters), it is possible to transform it into more powerful weapon. Same manner, it is possible to get new equipment for the robot in exchange of points of experiment. This equipment can also be manufactured by Maximilien.

Invention

Maximilien is a inventor, it can take in photograph any interesting object, then to make combinations, such as “vitre+fontaine+tonneau” gives a “receipt” to create an aquarium. Each “receipt” can be created if the player has materials necessary.

To note

  • Two secondary plays can be discovered, the fishing and the Golf. These virtual leisures are not essential to go until the end of the scenario, but to finish all the competitions constitutes almost a whole play.
  • Metacritic raises an average note of 87/100 among the notes of 40 professionals
