Dapaong

Dapaong (Dapango, local name), which means “new market” in Moba, is a commercial city located in the north of the Togo at 650 km of Lome and at 35 km of the border with the Burkina Faso. It is the chief town of the Préfecture of Ton as well as Région of Savannas.

Twinned with Issy-les-Moulineaux since 1989, Dapaong is a city populated mainly by the ethnos groups Moba (47%), Gourma, Mossi and Peuhl.

The population of the city is estimated in 2006 at 34.178 inhabitants, whose great majority has less than 20 years. The main resources come from the craft industry, the trade and the breeding, but especially from agriculture (70%): culture of cotton, the millet, corn and the yam.

The city plays a strategic part in the exchanges because occupying a choice place in the transit of the goods bound for the Burkina Faso, of the Bénin and the Niger.

Fed in electricity thanks to the dam Akosombo (Ghana), the city however has important problems as regards cleansing of the water and in the field of the Public health.
