" Dani California" is a song of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the first individual one extracted from their ninth album studio Stadium Arcadium . It left in the vats the 1 {{er}} May 2006.

The first world diffusion with the radio was made on April 3rd. This day, the radio of Houston KTBZ-FM, specialized in the rock'n'roll, diffused it uninterrupted from 16 to 7 p.m. This decision was very appreciated of the public since many listeners called the radio to encourage them to continue to pass the song.

After one week the song reached records of diffusion with 2880 passages to the radio between the 3 and on April 9th. Thanks to this incredible starting, the song returned directly number 1, a very rare fact, in the classification Modern Rock Tracks, a classification carried out by Billboard magazine which counts the songs most played on the American radios rock'n'roll every week.

Video clip

The clip was produced by Tony Kaye, known to have carried out the film American History X . It presents a series of parodies of the largest artists and groups which marked the history of the rock'n'roll and influenced Red Hot. Thus, the clip starts in black and white, one can see Anthony Kiedis singing in Elvis Presley. Successively, the group pays homage to the Beatles, with the psychedelic music of the Sixties with Jimi Hendrix (Kiedis resembles Prince), with the funk with Parliament-Funkadelic (" Flea" is equipped in Bootsy Collins), with the glam with Marc Bolan, David Bowie and Alice Cooper, with punk with the Sex Pistols, with the Gothic with the Misfits, with the “hairy” hard rock: Mötley Raw/Poison and finally with Nirvana. At the end of the clip, one sees them playing their own parts under a giant logo of the group. The song reaches its apogee at the time of the solo to the guitar of John Frusciante.

History of Dani

After a short evocation in the song " Californication " (" has teenage attaches with has baby inside "), the character of Dani is very present in individual the " By the Way" , (" Dani the girl " is quoted in the refrain of the song), its history thus continues in this individual.

Kiedis had already mentioned that the character of Dani represented all the women with which it had had a history.

Charge of plagiarism

The song is the object of a controversy where Red Hot Chili Peppers are shown to have plagiarized, with " Dani California" , a song of Tom Petty entitled " Last dance with Mary Jane", a title rock'n'roll which had had a certain success at its exit in 1993.

The charge was initially carried by organizer daN Gaffney with the antenna of WGMD Radio where it diffused extracts of the two songs inviting the listeners to judge " by them-mêmes" that the two songs would be in same the Tonalité, would divide same a harmonic Progression and same a Tempo and would resemble itself until in the topic of the words. Moreover, both were produced by Rick Rubin.

The telephone of the emission was taken by storm by the fans denouncing an attempt of the organizer to be made publicity on the success of the song. Its detractors have in particular wire-drawer owing to the fact that daN Gaffney accelerated the piece of Petty and that moreover the remainder of the songs and the solo of guitar are very different, finally the agreements used are very current in the Rock and are not even exactly the same ones between the two songs.

Tom Petty recently reacted to this charge by granting an interview to the magazine Rolling Stone to which he declared: “In truth, I doubt seriously that there was a negative intention under this history. If somebody had reproduced my song notes for note in a malicious way, perhaps that I would have acted, but I do not believe so much in the continuations. I believe that there are enough frivolous continuations in this country without one disputing on pop songs. ”
