Damsterdiep
The Damsterdiep is a channel Dutch of the province of Groningue.
Geography
Damsterdiep connects the Canal Van Starkenborgh to Groningue with the Estuaire of the Ems to Delfzijl. The length of the channel is of 27 km. Its importance for the River navigation is reduced because of its weak damping, especially since the creation of the Canal of Ems, which connects the same cities. On the crossroads of Damsterdiep with the channel Van Starkenborgh and that of Ems is located the Driewegsluis , a lock whose characteristic is to have three pairs of doors instead of the two usual ones.
With Appingedam, one created a channel of skirting of the city (by the south) in order to better evacuate the water of the channel, called the Nieuwe Diep .
Are located on Damsterdiep the cities and villages of Groningue, Oosterhoogebrug, Ruischerbrug, Garmerwolde, Ten Boer, Ten Post, Winneweer, Garrelsweer, Wirdumerdraai, Eekwerderdraai, Appingedam, Tuikwerd in Delfzijl.
History
The channel can be divided into two parts:- the section Winneweer - Delfzijl perpetuates the historical Delf. This channel goes back to before the year 1000; for a long time it preserved a direct opening on the sea. Under the impact of the Tide S, the course of the channel became more sinuous with the wire of time. Close to Delfzijl it was even formed true a Méandre, the Tuikwerderrak. Later, the channel was barred using lock S, to protect it from the influence of the sea. The first locks were built with Appingedam. Towards 1300 one closed the mouth of Delf with Delfzijl, using three locks.
- the section Ten Post - Groningue is more recent: it was dug towards 1425. Its course is much more rectilinear.
The section between the channel Van Starkenborgh and the Turfsingel in the center of Groningue was filled.
