History

The history proceeds in the town of New York in a near future. A Civil war between the United States of America and the States Libres makes rage. The States Libres are described in the first number as being mainly " New Jersey and its alentours" , but no other information is given. The Demilitarized zone is located at Manhattan. In an interview, Brian Wood explains why in the beginning the citizens of the center of the United States rebelled against the policies of preventive war of the US government, which started the second American civil war.

Manhattan is not almost empty, it does not remain any more but 400,000 people on the island (compared to the 1.5 million listed in 2000), primarily of the poor which could not be evacuated. Wood describes the island like " a mixture of New York 1997, Falloujah, and New Orleans after the hurricane Katrina ".

The hero is Matthew (Matty) Roth, a young naive photographer of Long Island, which enters the DMZ with a team of journalists. Hardly arrival, its team is killed during a confrontation with the " insurgés". Matty becomes the only journalist in the DMZ, and it starts to daily bring back to the daily galère citizens of Manhattan.
