Dún Laoghaire
Dún Laoghaire ( Dun Leary decides) is a port city located in the agglomeration dublinoise at 12 km of the center town. It is the administrative center of the County of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown.
The city was renamed in 1821 of the name of Kingstown in honor of the visit of the king Georges IV. The city found its Irish name on decision of its municipal council in 1921, one year before the independence of the country. The name comes from the founder from the city, Laoghaire, fifth king d' Irlande, who chooses the site as bases maritime for the organization of raids towards the England and the France. Laoghaire is the king who has allowed Saint Patrick to traverse the country to preach the Christianisme there.
Today the city is one of the ten plus big cities of Ireland. It has a great shopping mall attended by the inhabitants of the south of Dublin.
Dún Laoghaire is connected to the center of Dublin by DART. The city is articulated around its port which is the starting point of a line of ferry towards Holyhead with the Wales. The port is surrounded by two long granite piers. The quay East is one of the favorite walks of the dublinois since the end of the 19th century. The port shelters also several yachts clubs of which Royal Irish Yacht Club.
Two other sites attract the tourists with Dún Laoghaire: The Maritime national museum of Ireland (Maritime National Museum off Ireland) and the Turn Martello which shelters a small museum on James Joyce.
