Dèce

Dèce , also called Trajan Dèce ( Gaius Messius Quintus Trajanus Decius ) (v. 201 - July 1st 251), was Roman Emperor of 249 with 251.

Biography

Dèce was a Pannonia N of Roman stock. It was prefect of the City of Philippe the Arab when this one required of him to repress usurpations. Dèce discharged its task. However at the end of the campaign its own soldiers acclaimed it emperor.

Philippe the Arab left in his turn to shift against this new usurper. They clashed with autumn 249 at the time of the Bataille of Vérone which marked the end of Philippe.

In 250, Décius promulga an edict obliging all the citizens to sacrifice to the gods for the safeguard of the Empire. Disobedience to this edict which can lead to the capital punishment. This edict marks the beginning of persecutions against the Christian which refused to sacrifice to the other gods.

In 251, the Goths invaded the Mésie and the Thrace, dismantled legions mobilized by the conflict between Philippe and Décius. Décius carried out a forwarding against them in the Dobroudja. After having seen his/her son Herennius Etruscus perishing with the combat, Dèce itself was killed in June.

Trébonianus Gallus, governor of Messiah raised his surviving son Hostilianus with the capacity while being arranged for him to be associated. Hostilianus not being long in dying of disease, Trébonianus Gallus became emperor.

Persecutions of Dèce are at the origin of the legend of the Seven Door frames of Éphèse, included in the sourate 18 (the cave) of the Coran.
