History of the Cypriot book

The Cypriot book was introduced after l'" indépendance" Republic of Cyprus in 1883, with parity with the Pound sterling. It was then subdivided 20 Shilling S (σελίνι/σελίνια, şilin). However, the shilling was divided into 9 Piastre S (γρόσι/γρόσια, kuruş), thus establishing a bond with the preceding currency, the Turkish Livre which was divided into 100 kuruş. The Cypriot book was thus divided into 180 Piastre S of 40 Para S.

Following the inflation which followed the second world war, Cyprus re-examined its monetary system and has undertook a decimalization. The Cypriot book was then divided into 1000 Mil S. the part of 50 millets being called " shilling" and that of 5 millets " piastre".

In 1983, following the progressive loss in value of the parts in millets, the subdivision was re-examined and delivers it Cypriot was divided into 100 Hundred S (σεντ, feels). While the parts in millets were withdrawn gradually from circulation and any more legal tender did not have.

It is it should be noted that in Greek, lira and book are said both λίρα ( will read ) and that, except for historical reasons, the French translation could be just as easily to read Cypriot . Since the April 29th 2005, delivers it Cypriot integrated the Mécanisme of European foreign exchange rate, said MCE II, so that Cyprus can join, in 2008 (?), the Euro. At the request of the Cypriot authorities, the Ministers for the Euro area of the European Union, the president of the European Central bank and the Ministers and the governors of the central banks of the Denmark, on Estonia, Lithuania, Slovenia and Cyprus decided to include by mutual agreement delivers it Cypriot in the MCE II.

The course pivot of the Cypriot book was fixed at 1 € = 0,585274 CYP. The authorized undulation is of more or less 15% around this rate. As of the May 2nd 2005 (opening of the financial markets), this rate came into effect.
