Cypress of Morocco

The cypress of Morocco , or cypress of the Atlas , is a Arbre of the family of the Cupressacée S, originating in the Morocco.

This tree is regarded as a Espèce in danger of disappearance and appears in the red Liste of the UICN.

Distribution

The cypress of Morocco is a rare species, endemic of the south of Morocco, which one finds in the valley of the Oued Fiss in the mountains of the high Moroccan Atlas in the south of Marakech in the west of the Morocco. The majority of the individuals are old, with very little natural regeneration, in particular because of the Surpâturage by the Chèvre S.

Classification

This species is considered, according to the authors:
  • either like a distinct Species ( Cupressus atlantica Gaussen),
  • or like a variety ( Cupressus sempervirens L. VAr. atlantica Silba.) of the always green cypress ( Cupressus sempervirens ),
  • is like a variety ( Cupressus dupreziana L. VAr. atlantica (Gaussen) Silba.) of the Cypress of Tassili ( Cupressus dupreziana ).

Vernacular names: cypress of Morocco, cypress of the Atlas, azel (Berber).

Description

This species is distinguished from the species relationship Cupressus sempervirens (the common cypress) by the color of its foliage much more blue, with a white resin spot on each Feuille, and the shorter branches, often flattened in only one plan.

It also carries smaller cones, from 1,5 to 2,5 cm length.

The Cyprès of Tassili ( Cupressus dupreziana ) is very resembling and certain authors regard the cypress of Morocco as a variety ( Cupressus dupreziana VAr. atlantica ) of the cypress of Tassili.

The cypress of Morocco does not share the male system of single reproduction of apomixie which characterizes the cypress of Tassili.
