The cyclo-cross is a discipline cyclist practitioner with the autumn and during the Hiver. The circuit is composed of ways, meadows, and a little road; artificial obstacles are placed on the circuit in order to force the participants to pose foot with ground and to transport the bicycle. To jump these specific obstacles some practice the Saut of the rabbit.

The length of the test is calculated according to the time of the race, for example 1 hour for the elite. The number of turn is determined by the police chiefs according to the time necessary with the participants to traverse the 2 first turns.

The Vélo S are reinforced and equipped with tires with cramps and brakes with cleats to let pass mud.

History of the cyclo-cross

The " term; cyclo-cross" for the first time in 1935 appears. Nevertheless, the cyclo-cross had been already practiced for several years already. It is into 1903 that Géo Lefèvre invents to some extent the cyclo-cross, by organizing the first " cyclo-pedestrian cross-country race " with Avray:

Suppose a cyclist who has in time of war for example, the obligation not to be satisfied with the main roads, to roll or of trotter through plowed grounds, to thread in the underwoods, to cross ditches and you will know what is the principle of the pedestrian cyclo cross-country race. Géo Lefèvre.

Even if with the beginning the cyclo-cross were used only as winter preparation with the cyclist on road, it is a discipline with whole share today. The material evolved/moved well (automatic pedals, very light materials…), the runners can change bicycle several times by turn, the passages of race on foot where the cycloones must carry their bicycle are rarer and more courts, certain acrobats even manage to cross the boards while jumping with their bicycle.

Competitions

The first Championnat of the world of cyclo-cross is organized in France in 1950. French Jean Robic is the first champion. During ten year the discipline remains a French speciality. Then the cyclo-cross is exported and become popular in several countries of Europe, in particular the Belgium, which since ten year, dominates the discipline. Nevertheless Belgium is not the only country to be illustrated in cyclo-cross. The Swiss , the Netherlands, the Italy and the Czech Republic have several sportsmen of high levels. The cyclo-cross is also applied largely with the Japan, the Canada, and especially to the the United States. In 1999, while becoming the first American world champion in cyclo-cross, the junior Matt Kelly definitively anchored the discipline to it.
