Custodie franciscaine of Holy Land

The custodie franciscaine of Holy Land or custodie of Holy Land (in Latin: Custodia Terræ Sanctæ) is a catholic institution in charge of the interests of the Roman Catholic church in Holy Land, in particular of the guard of the holy Places with Jerusalem, since the 13th century.

Since the May 15th 2004, Custode of Holy Land is Pierbattista Pizzaballa of Italian nationality. He is also vicar for the Hebraic catholic Communauté of Israel (he was assisting of the auxiliary bishop Jean-Baptiste Gourion).

History

The custodie was founded in 1342. However the order franciscain was present out of Holy Land since its origin about 1220.
