Geography
Located on the German Border , joint with Überherrn on the German side . It also divides splendid a Forêt, the Warndt with the Germany.
At the border of the Germany and near the Highway A4, the city constitutes a privileged way of transit. The principal districts of the commune are: Altschacht, Beautiful Site, Bellevue, Breckelberg, Center, Fatima, Garang, Houvergarten, Houve, Morocco, Neuland.
History
In the beginning, Creutzwald was made of three independent villages: Creutzwald the Cross, Wilhelmsbronn and Creutzwald Houve.
It is starting from 1602 that the family of Cop becomes purchaser of the forest of the Cross in the Warndt, which belonged then to the abbey of Bouzonville. The village which develops to with it, Creutzwald the Cross, will become in 1611 the support of a seigniory concerned with the sovereignty of Lorraine. However, part of the incipient village was destroyed during the Guerre Thirty Year old (1618 - 1648) and even if the inhabitants dispersed, they returned after the war.
At this point in time in 1626, Daniel of Condé creates on the grounds of the count Guillaume of Nassau - Saarbrucken a new agglomeration which will take the name of Creutzwald Nassau or Wilhelmsbronn. Two independent villages coexist then create their respective glassmakings, thus attracting many workmen.
In 1705, the duke Léopold, grants the charter of foundation of a glassmaking to the locality Houve, in order to start again prosperity in its states. A third village is born thus, and takes the name of Creutzwald Houve.
In 1766, the three communes are attached to the France. The city is formed in 1810 per wish of the inhabitants to carry out the fusion of the three villages of the Cross, Houve and Wilhelmsbronn. It takes the denomination of Creutzwald then the Cross. One will continue a long time to call it Creutzwald-the-Cross although it is about a Pléonasme, the German word Kreuz meaning cross . The name of the city is officially simplified in 1961.
The city holds its name of the cross (or martyrdom) set up by a father of the abbey of Bouzonville, cross protected by oaks, beeches and birches. After the sudden damage at the time of the War Thirty Year old, this cross made place towards 1630 with a vault out of wooden. A church was built there in 1730, with the current site of the church of the center.
Glass
The first industrial rise is related to glass, thanks to the abundance of the wood and the presence of sand siliceous, necessary to the operation of the furnaces with Verrerie. The first glassmaking was open between 1607 and 1611, and this activity perduré until the medium of the XIXe century (as still some traces in the streets testify some to the city: place of Cop, places Glassmakers).
The forging mill
It is about the middle of the XVIIIe century that the Sidérurgie starts in the forest of Houve. Initially supplied with the charcoal, the registers of grievances carry testimony from there, the blast furnaces then profited from the coal and coke until the end of the exploitation the shortly after the Second world war.
Coal
The exploitation of the Coal, known in the Saar since the XVe century, develops with the XVIIIe century when one starts to replace wood in the forging mills and the Salines. It should be said that with the Marie well of seat 1, the first coal seam is reached only in 1898. The production goes however quickly and to increase considerably, following the example local population. The exploitation will continue until the April 23rd 2004, where for reasons of Mondialisation and the more profitable and more powerful fuel arrival, the French production of coal was abandoned.Creutzwald is thus the last town of France to have had a mine of coal in activity.
Administration
Following the resignation of Andre Bohl (for personal reasons) on January 30th, 2007, it is Jean-Luc Wozniak who was elected mayor of Creutzwald.
The agglomeration of Creutzwald constitutes, with the communes of Bisten-in-Lorraine, Guerting, Ham-under-Varsberg and Varsberg the Communauté of communes of the Warndt.
Although it is the most populated city district of which it forms part, Creutzwald is not the chief town of canton, frequent characteristic in the French cantonal organization, related to the demographic trends since the beginning of the 19th century: the population of Bouzonville, in 1885, was still of 1.698 inhabitants when that of Creutzwald reached only 1.493 inhabitants.
