Crater of Lonar
The crater of Lonar is located beside small the Ville éponyme, in the State of Maharashtra in India. It is largest crater dug in rocks of Basalte and is partially filled by salt water a Lac.
Of almost circular form, it has a diameter of 1,83 km and made 170 m of depth. It is estimated that its age is of: 52000 years (Pleistocene) with ±: 6000 years. The crater of Lonar is located at approximately 400 km in the North-East of Mumbai and 100 km in the south-east of the famous caves of Ajantâ. The station nearest is that of Jalna to a little less 70 km.
The first research directed towards a volcanic origin crater, but now it is identified like a crater of impact. The origin of impact of this crater is clearly shown by the presence of Plagioclase which was converted into Maskelynite; transformation which could be made only by the shock of a meteoritic impact .
