The Lord Mayor of Cork, Terence Mac Swiney, letting himself die of hunger in prison in October 1920, became one of the martyrs of the sinn feiners at the time of the war of Irish independence. At that time, the future general Montgomery is affected as a major with the 17th British brigade of infantry which stations there until 1923.
