Copernicia alba
The Caranday or Ananachícarí ( Copernicia alba ) is a plant of the arécacée family of the S of the area of the Gran Chaco, especially of the province Argentinian of Formosa. It is used little in gardening contrary with other palm trees of the area. It is the cold most resistant species kind Copernicia .
Characteristics
Copernicia alba is a Palmier of until 20 m height with a Stipe 40 cm in maximum diameter, seldom bifide, covered with a bark of grisacée color and surface smooth or marked by the traces of the old branches in the adults. The radicular system is wide and deep. Wood is resistant and dense (up to 0,92 of relative density at the adult specimens). It presents webbed sheets, in the shape of range, grouped on the apex of the stem. The rachis are equipped with hard and curved blackthorns. The flowers form inflorescences in Spadice S of color yellow and of almost 2 m length, made of flowers Hermaphrodite S of a few 4 mm length and laid out in spiral. Each flower has three ovary S, of which one will develop out of fruit. This one is a globulous bay of pulpy consistency and monoséminée dark color. The seed is ovoid, smooth, of color châtain clearly and going up to 12 mm length.
Habitat and culture
Copernicia alba is adapted to a climate of monsoons, with periods of dryness alternating with floods. He asks much sun, but he supports the cold well once the Germination took place. He divides his habitat with the pindó ( Syagrus romanzoffiana ), Trithrinax campestris , Trithrinax biflabellata and Acrocomia totai .
Germination is fast, taking place in less than two months, and the growth is fast under adequate good conditions, roughly a few 35 cm annually. It supports well the extremes of acidity or alkalinity, but it is sensitive to the lack of sun. The youthful ones form their palms only after having reached a certain height, initially forming linear and lancéolées sheets, finely notched.
Use
The trunk of the adult specimens is used in the industry of wood for the manufacture of telephone or electric posts.
