Convention of Carthagène
The Convention for protection and the development of the seamen circle in the area of the Caribbean , or Convention of Carthagène , was signed with Carthagène (Colombia) on March 24th, 1983.
Objective of Convention
The purpose of convention is to promote:- the fight against pollution
- the protection of the medium
- co-operation in the event of major environmental risk
- the evaluation of the environmental impacts
- scientific and technical assistance
Protocols
Within the framework of convention, three protocols were signed: - adoptee in 1983 and come into effect in 1986 - protocol relating to the especially protected surfaces and fauna and flora (SPAW), adopted in 1990 and come into effect in 2000 - protocol relating to pollution by terrestrial sources and activities, adopted in 1999.
