Congregation for the doctrines of the faith
The Congrégation for the Doctrines of the Faith is oldest of the nine congregations of the Roman Curie.
History
The Congregation for the Doctrines of the Faith was founded under the name of Sacrée Congregation of the Roman and universal Enquiry by the pope Paul III in the bubble ab.initio Licet , the July 21st 1542. It had the role of fighting against the Hérésie S. It was thus responsible for the Inquisition.
The pope Black and white X reform the institution on June 29th, 1908 and gives him the name of “Sacrée congregation of the Holy Office”. It has as a role to take care of the purity of the doctrines and manners. It takes thereafter the name of Congrégation for the doctrines of the Faith following the Motu landlord Integrae servandae , of December 7th, 1965.
By the reform of December 7th 1965, Paul VI removes in particular the Index.
Jean-Paul II specified his current function in 1988 by the apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus: “ the clean task of the Congregation for the Doctrines of the Faith is to promote and protect the doctrines and manners in conformity with the faith in everyone catholic: all that, in some manner, relates to this field thus concerns its competence ”. Pastor No-claims bonus §48.
Of 1981 with 2005, it was directed by the cardinal Ratzinger, become pope under the name of Benoît XVI. It is directed since the May 13rd 2005 by the American cardinal William Joseph Levada.
