Conga

The congas are Musical instruments of percussion (also called drums congos and will tumbadoras with Cuba).
High drum with long barrel slightly reinflated emblematic of the Music Latin but originating in the Mozambique and played in couple.

They are three:

  1. the Quinto indicates the drum with the acutest stamp and also the drum solo (also called Primero ).
  2. the Conga or the Segundo is addressed to the average drum also called Tres , Tres Back or Tres golpes , in the cycle of Rumba Guaguanco and the Rebajador in Comparsa.
  3. the Tumba or Salidor is the broadest drum of diameter and with the most serious voice.

One calls conguero the percussionnist who plays of the congas.

The binary rate/rhythm (2/2) played by those is called also the “ conga ” (or tango Congo ), like the Danse, which consists of 3 pas de side before raising a foot and setting out again in the other direction.

This rate/rhythm appeared towards 1550, when the Esclaves Cuba ins could meet between them in circles called “cabildos”, to prepare the Epiphany (the festival of the kings, the January 6th), and to dance in the street Sundays.

This continuous Music to be played in the Carnival S of Cuba, of which most important is that of Santiago.

Towards 1800, the congas will replace the drawers of the cupboards (Cajón be) or of the cod cajots in the Rumba.

At the end of the Years 1930, Desi Arnaz will start again the fashion of the conga (conga of living room) to the the United States.

In 1940, Arsenio Rodriguez will add the rate/rhythm of the guaguancó (one of the forms of the Rumba) played by congas to its orchestra, which will become a “conjunto then”. This will revolutionize the Its Cuban and will precede the Salsa.

Among large the congueros of the history, let us quote Tata Güines, Mongo Santamaría, Ray Barretto, Giovanni Hidalgo, Miguel Angá Díaz, Richie Flores…
