Confluence

A confluent , or not of junction , is the place where two meet (sometimes more) River.

In general, one of the two rivers, whose Débit is less important, is regarded as the Affluent. It happens that the river born of the junction of two or several others takes a new name, as if it were impossible to recognize most important of the affluents. It is the case in France, for example, of the Maine, the the Gironde, or Yonne (Voir the polemic between the Seine and Yonne).

The confluence is often a strategic point, by the Communication S which it allows, selected for the establishment of a Ville. Thus Lyon is with the confluence of the the Saone and the the Rhone, Coblentz of the the Moselle and the the Rhine, Wuhan of Han and the Changjiang, Belgrade of the the Danube and the Save, Nijni-Novgorod of the the Volga and the Oka, Manaus of the the Amazon and the Rio Negro, Saint Louis of the Missouri and the the Mississippi, Pittsburgh of the Monongahela and the Allegheny forming the Ohio

It is advisable to differentiate the situation from junction, regional scales or main road, and the site of junction, local scales. The cities always do not settle between the two rivers which meet, inter alia because of the risk of floods (example of Saint Louis). In Lyon, the city kept away a long time from the site from junction, which is on the other hand developed in the project of contemporary town planning " Confluence". Moreover, one situation of major junction necessarily does not give birth to a large metropolis: Cairo, Illinois, where Ohio and the Mississippi meet, is a small town.
