Confession of Augsburg
The confession of Augsburg is the text founder of the Luthéranisme.
It is a profession of faith which the Protestants presented to the Diète of Augsburg in 1530. Martin Luther, which had prepared it, was then with the round of applause of the empire and could not be with the diet; Philippe Melanchthon his disciple was there the principal one representing new religion.
It was presented to the emperor Charles Quint with Augsburg the June 25th 1530.
The careful disciple inserted in this declaration of faith some modifications suitable to reconcile the spirits; nevertheless Charles Quint made it proscribe by the diet, where the catholic deputies were in majority. He followed between the princes Lutherans a league offensive and defensive, known as of Ligue of Smalkade, which after long combat ends up obtaining the Freedom of conscience.
In 1540, Mélanchthon published a revised version, the “ Variations ”, which gained the adhesion of Jean Calvin, but was rejected by the Lutherans of strict obedience.
Altered by the “Formula of Harmony” in 1580, the confession of Augsburg is the profession of faith of the Lutherans and “healthy doctrines base it”. Its application is obligatory in all the Églises claiming itself of Luther.
