The Parisii were a Gallic people alive in the current Paris region. Perhaps their name would come from the Gallic kwarisi (perhaps in connection with the careers of Montmartre?).
According to César (53 av. J.C.), their principal city (Oppidum) would have been Lutetia (today Paris), but the basement of Paris intramurally did not deliver yet of furniture protohistoric of this time.
A recent explanation to this enigma however was perhaps finally found: with the favor of excavations related to the A86, traces of a very important proto-urban city (more than 15 ha, that is to say the double of the island from the City in Paris), of the tombs of warriors, the important urban equipment, etc, were found with Nanterre.
Geography of the site, which authorizes a better defense than the exposed island of the City pleads of as much so that this site is that of the oppidum to which the various localities were attached (of which that of the island of the City).

Parisii gave their name to Paris, Villeparisis, Cormeilles-in-Parisis, Fontenay-in-Parisis and all the area of the Parisis.
These people emitted gold currencies among most beautiful of the Gallic coining, the Statère of Parisii.
