Computer Emergency Response Team

In Computer security, there exist official organizations charged to ensure of the services of prevention of the risks and assistance the treatments of incidents. These CERT ( Computer Emergency Response Team ) is centers of alarm and reaction to the computer attacks, intended for the companies and/or the administrations, but from which information is generally accessible to all.

Roles of the CERT

The priority tasks of a CERT are the following ones:

  • centralization of the requests for assistance following the incidents of safety (attacks) on the networks and the information systems: reception of the requests, analyzes symptoms and possible correlation of the incidents;

  • treatment of alarms and reaction to the computer attacks: analyzes technical, information exchange with other CERTs, contribution to specific technical studies;
  • establishment and maintenance of a base of data of the vulnerabilities;
  • prevention by diffusion of information on the precautions to take to minimize the risks of the incident or at worst the their consequences;
  • possible coordination with the other entities (out of the field of action): centers of competence networks, operators and suppliers of access to Internet CERTs nationals and international.

The CERT in France

There exists several CERTs in France. Here the list of the team members of the FIRST or the TF-CSIRT:

  • CERTA (pertaining to the DCSSI/SGDN) is the CERT dedicated to the sector of the French administration;

  • CERT-STI is the CERT dedicated to the sector of Industry, the Services and the Tertiary sector (STI). It was created with the end of the year 1998 by four partners: Alcatel, CNES, ELF and France Telecom;
  • the CERT-RENATER is the CERT dedicated to the community of the members of GIP RENATER (Domestic network of telecommunications for Technology, Teaching and Research).

Two other French CERTs are known, but make neither left the FIRST nor of the TF-CSIRT:

  • the CERT-LEXSI is a private CSIRT of company LEXSI (Laboratory of Expertise in Computer security) dedicated to the subscribers of technological survey CSI but also to the whole of the companies and institutions - the TF-CSIRT reference this CERT, but does not accredit it;
  • FrSIRT is a private CSIRT of a.D.Consulting company dedicated to the large companies and the administrations subscribed with the services of technological survey VNS.
