Company of inter-commune transport of Brussels
The Company of Inter-commune Transport of Brussels (the STIB), in Dutch Maatschappij voor het intercommunaal vervoer you Brussel (MIVB), is a organization of public interest of Brussels of Public transport.
Founded in of 1954, this company is the main line operator of public transport to Brussels. The STIB exploits today a network of 3 lines of Métro (39 km), 18 lines of Tramway (128.3 km) and 47 lines of Autobus (348.8 km). Its network extends on the 19 communes from the Area from Brussels-Capital (161 km2) and certain ends of lines of surface serve communes of the outskirts of the city. The frequentation of the network is estimated at 270 million travellers per annum (2006) that is to say close to: 740,000 per day.
She passes, every five years, a contract of management with the Area of Brussels-Capital, to lay down her strategic objectives (mission, kilometric production, market shares) and to determine the amount of subsidy.
At the strategic level, the STIB is adviser of the Area. At the tactical level (to determine the network to implement to achieve the goals) and operational (exploitation, marketing), the STIB has a rather strong autonomy, the Area having nevertheless to give its assent for the modifications of the network as well as tariffs.
The principal transport documents are the charts of 1,5 or 10 voyages as well as the one day old chart. A month's subscription or annual exists, as well for the network of the STIB alone as for the whole of the public grid system (the STIB, railroad, tce and De Lijn) in the Area. Children of less than 12 years living the Area of Brussels-Capital, as well as the elderly of more than 65 years can request a free subscription. Cheap rates on the subscriptions exist for the 12-18 years, the 60-65 years, the people with low-income as well as the students.
Noctis: the night network
Since April 2007, of baptized new lines Noctis is in circulation the nights from Friday to Saturday and from Saturday to Sunday, at a rate of a bus every 20 minutes until approximately 3 hours of the morning, making it possible to leave the evening without having late problem to return at home, nor to be constrained to take a taxi. Brussels thus obtains a night network worthy of many other European capitals.
The majority of these lines share a terminus common to the downtown area, with the stop De Brouckère (it is about a star topology of the night network), to that is added two circular lines (N66 and N99).
The pilot project was based on the line 71, baptized N71. The latter being partially replaced by the N09 line. The N71 news does not roll any more during the nights from Friday to Saturday/from Saturday to Sunday, but is exploited the nights from Thursday to Friday, at a rate of a bus every 35 minutes, it thus acts most probably of a new pilot aiming at evaluating the extension of the Noctis network in week.
A specific tariffing was founded (3 € by way, is approximately the double of the normal price except subscription), the subscribers can pay a supplement so that their subscription also covers the Noctis ways, in the negative one, they are invited to pay their way with the voyage or via a special chart giving right 10 ways to a cheap rate (21 €).
Line 47
Line 47 is a line of bus of the STIB. It connects the station of Vilvorde to De Brouckère - Markets since April 16th, 2002 and was originally the longest line of the network of the STIB between on October 26th, 1982 and on December 10th, 2001 with its 22 kilometers when it moved of Vilvorde in Moortebeek. Currently one finds there mainly buses Van Hool A300 but also of A500.
First line 47 would go back to April 3rd, 1910 when the tram connected the Church of Laeken to Longchamps Wood (Cambers), service road prolonged in 1911 in the communal place of Laeken until 1913. Then, it is starting from 1927 that the line will take its current configuration when it connects the Meudon castle to Neder-over-Heembeek to the Stock Exchange (service road ensured by standard trams). The line of bus (which takes again the way of the tram since 1945) was brought into service on July 2nd, 1957 between Marly (street of Meudon) and Stock Exchange (street Devaux). Its route varied rather much in time, and it is starting from 1963 that some voyages serve the commune of Vilvorde.
Line 54
Line 54 is a line of bus of the STIB. It connects the place from Luxembourg to Brussels/Ixelles with Forest.
Brought into service in April 1939 and May 1939 between Machelen and Forest, it was the only line of Trolleybus to Brussels. Its route varied rather little in time, only some additional service roads were added (My Countryside, Porte of Namur,…). On this line, the trolley buses yielded their place to the buses in 1964. July 2nd, 2007, it was divided into 2 lines, 54 (Place of Luxembourg - Forest Center) and 64 (Machelen - Door of Namur).
Line 75
Line 75 is a line of bus of the STIB. It is located at Anderlecht and connects the city Bon Air to the subway station CERIA. It counts in all 14 stops and is served by of Midibus (A308), drunk with 2 doors smaller than the normal buses. The line was created at the same time as the prolongation of subway 2, at the time the reorganization of September 2006.
