Commutation (linguistic)
The method known as of commutation was invented by the phonologists. It is one of the tools fundamental of the Fonctionnalisme of André Martinet.
Commutation consists in commutating a sound with another knowing if this sound makes it possible to distinguish from the significant units, i.e. of the minimal pair (like king and faith ).
If the two sounds appear nondistinctive units of significant units, then they are not Phonème S, but only of the milked of the same phoneme. These features are regarded as not-relevant . Among them, one distinguishes the contextual alternatives and the free alternatives.
Luis prieto tried to use the method of commutation at the semantic level.
