Communal house

In Belgium, the communal house (in Dutch: gemeentehuis ) is the equivalent in France of the Mairie or the Town hall.

This expression indicates:

  • the seat of the communal authority;

  • the place where meets the college of the burgomaster and alderman S (Executive power); since October 8th, 2006 the College of the Burgomaster and Echevins takes Communal Collège name since it (it) President (E) of C.P.A.S. seat at this assembly.
  • the place where the town council meets (Legislative power);
  • the seat of the municipal authorities which are the capacity nearest to the inhabitants.

The communal house is the administrative place which counts the population, distributes any administrative document, manages public places like the communal schools and libraries, and all the questions cultural, social, and of health for the population amenable to the commune.

A Entité communal Belgian has either the statute of common, or the statute of Ville. In the case of a City, one will speak rather about Town hall.
