Colon

The colon is since the Cæcum until the Rectum a topographic part of the large intestine, pertaining to the digestive system. It makes following the Iléon, part final of the Small intestine . It lays out out of framework in the abdominal cavity.

Subdivisions

The colon is composed of several segments, with starting from the Iléon:
  • the cæcum
  • the ascending colon or right colon
  • the transverse colon
  • the colon going down or left colon
  • the sigmoid colon

Role in digestion

The role of the colon is the Absorption of the Eau of the not digested matters. On the level of the colon, the pH varies between the normal limits of 4,5 and 7,5 in the adult.

Surgery

The surgical operation which consists of the ablation of this body is the Colectomie. It can relate to all the colon (= total colectomy), the right colon (= right hemicolectomy), the left colon (= left hemicolectomy), or a segment of the colon (= segmentary colectomy). It can be concluded by an artificial anus or colostomy, or by an anastomosis (= seam) between iléon and colon; or colon and rectum.
