Cointe
Cointe is a district of Liege in Belgium, located at the south-west of the downtown area. It includes the hill of Cointe itself, but the valley located at the west, known under the name of district of the Heathers , is generally associated there. End of the XIXe century until 2001, the astronomical observatory of the Université of Liege was in the middle of the Park of Cointe and played a big role at the international scientific level and made known the name of Cointe in the whole world, while taking part in the cultural life of Liege and its area, in particular thanks to the activities which were organized there by the astronomical Société of Liege.
The hill is bordered in the east and the south by the Meuse, and the districts of Guillemins, of Fragnée, the Valley-Benoit and Sclessin, seat of the stage of the Standard of Liege. In north the hill of Saint-Gilles and the district of the Laveu, in the west the commune of Saint Nicolas's Day.
History
Old hunting ground of the Prince-bishops of Liege, the first historical mentions of Cointe refer to the Vault Saint-Maur, built in 1673 with the site of old a oratorical. It was désacralisée at the time of the Révolution inhabitant of Li2ege of 1795. The district took its true rise on the occasion the World Fair of Liege of 1905.
Geography
Cointe counts three distinct zones of habitat:- the district of Batty, historical establishment located on the hill.
- the private park (become since public domain), with the many middle-class residences of the beginning of the 20th century.
- the district of the Heathers.
A plain of sport and a public park occupy the major part of the plate.
Characteristics
- the hill lodges the Interallied Mémorial, built after the First World War, in the honor of the contribution of the town of Liege to resistance on the western face. With the monument the church with the Sacred Heart and Notre-Dame de Lourdes is also associated (improperly indicated like Basilique).
- the district was the theater of the last political assassination in Belgium. Andre Cools, socialist Politician Belgian, was killed there by ball the July 18th 1991.
- the hill is crossed by longest road Tunnel of Belgium (1511 respectively 1639 meters, the tunnel being double), the highway E25 allowing the highway passage of north (Brussels, Namur, Maastricht, Aachen) towards the south of the city (Luxembourg, Bastogne).
- With the foot of the hill, on the site of the Guillemins, is currently built by SNCB a station TGV drawn by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava Valls.
- the private park shelters old the observatory of the Université of Liege and one of the remarkable villas of the architect Gustave Metal worker-Bovy (1858-1910), originating in the city.
- to note the festival of the district, celebrated the weekend of Pentecost.
