Cognac public garden
The public garden of Cognac , located in the center town of Cognac in the department of the Charente (France), is one of rare the gardens to English the classified opened with the public. It is the result of the marriage of the two gardens of two contiguous properties and shelters the town hall and the museum of Art and History.
History
The Otard hotel of the Barn is bought in 1889, and the town hall moves in 1892 there. The architect Alfred Leroux refits the building and its Campanile and its monumental staircase adds to him. The landscape designer Edouard André redraws the park in hollow garden with prospects and water level.The hotel Dupuy d' Angeac is bought in 1921 and becomes the museum. Antoine Raymond Clavery is in charge of installation. He creates the theater of nature while drawing left the natural foothills and makes a success of the marriage of the two gardens by preserving the style of Edouard André, with however in this part of the narrower alleys and any perspective large news. In 1943 the garden is classified.
The storm of 1999 cuts down 288 trees out of the 720. It is the occasion of a rehabilitation under the direction of the landscape gardener Jean-François Galinet, who takes again the plans of Antoine Raymond Clavery and Edouard André.
Description
Its surface is of seven hectares and it is located in center town, mainly visible since the streets which skirt it because enclosed grids. Since the main entrance, the sight relates to a vast undulating prospect to the monumental staircase for the town hall. On the line, ducks and swans swim on the water level downwards. This one is in the prolongation of a network of false rivers and cascades.The rosery borders one of with dimensions of the garden with a Pergola leant with the enclosing wall which of this with dimensions separates it from joint houses. Like all the large gardens of this style, it comprises factories:
- the Gothic tower, built in 1835, remarkable by the association of materials and colors, in the center of a small basin (it is registered with the additional Inventaire of the historic buildings (ISMH),
- the Orangerie, of style Malmaison,
- the caves and the cascades “with the antique”, with an imitation of nature by tree trunks out of mortar moulded to build the bridges and the steps of the staircases,
- the Kiosque with music,
The theater of nature, near to the museum was set up while making use of preexistent foothills. One reaches it at the time of concerts by the court of the museum, very sober square court (whose was moved the war memorial), which emphasizes the buildings which surround it on three with dimensions.
