Code Louis

The Code Louis is the name given to the “ordinances on the reformation of the civil and criminal justice” of 1666 and 1670, and this in the honor of the king Louis XIV. It is the ordering of the laws and jurisdictions of the kingdom, whose South was of “Roman” right and north of common law. It was elaborate under the direction of Colbert starting from 1661.

In 1667, it is civil justice. The thirty five articles treat especially hierarchisation of the various courts, discipline of the magistrates and toilettent the procedure.

In 1670, it is criminal justice. One maintains, according to the spirit of the time, the question, the galères and the capital punishment.
