Cochinchine
The Cochinchine was the southernmost part (in the south) of the Vietnam in the east of the Kampuchea, forming especially the delta of the river Mekong.
In the beginning named Jiaozhi (交阯 or 交趾) by its leaders Chinese, Cochin is phonetics for the Chinese character meaning cross hills at base or cross toes . Locally it is called Nam Bộ (南圻), meaning “southern border. ”
In -111, under the reign of Wudi of the China Han, the Commandement Jiaozhi (交趾郡) was established, among two other commands in the remainder of Vietnam: Jiuzhen (九真郡) and Ri' nan (日南郡). In 939, Ngô Quyền (吳權) proclaimed king de Cochin and began a dynasty.
During colonization by the France, its capital was Saigon (ex-Prey Nor Kor). The two other parts of Vietnam were the Annam and the Tonkin.
In August 1945, of the insurrections take place in French Indo-China.
France (Provisional government of the French Republic) recognizes the independence of the Democratic republic of Vietnam but she refuses to include the Cochinchine, which will cause a war and the separation of Vietnam between the Vietnam of North and the South, in 1954.
