Cnide
Cnide (or Knidos ) is a Greek city of the Asia Mineure located at the north of the island of Rhodos, on the coasts of Carie (current Turkey). The foundation of Cnide is allotted to Spartiates. Towards 545 av . J. - C. it is subjected by the Perses and takes part with them in the Bataille of Salamine (480 av. J. - C.). After the Persian defeat of the Cape Mycale in 479 av. J. - C. the city joined the Ligue of Délos but revolts against the Athenian domination in 412 av. J. - C. Ville still relatively important under the Roman Empire it has the free statute of city. Under the Byzantine Empire however it lost any importance and is only one simple village.
It is with the temple of Aphrodite of Cnide that celebrates it statue of the goddess carried out by the sculptor Praxitèle was.
Eudoxe de Cnide the astronomer, Ctésias, which wrote on the history of Persia, and Sostrate de Cnide, the architect of the Phare of Alexandria are most famous of the inhabitants of Cnide.
