Climate of Haut-Rhin

The climate of the Haut-Rhin is of continental type because of Western protection which the the Vosges offer. This protection, illustration of the Effet of fœhn, has in particular as a consequence that the area of Colmar is one of driest of France (weakness of precipitations). The Sundgau much wetter, is located vis-a-vis the Belfort Gap, not being protected by the Vosges. Its climate is of this fact closer to that of the Franche-Comté (see: Climate of the Territory of Belfort).

The Vosges are generally snow-covered from December to the beginning of April.

The greyness and the fogs being less persistent lasting the winter months than in the the Low-Rhine, this department profits from a more important sunning, favourable in particular with the development of sound Vignoble.
