The 3 Cuirassé S pre-dréadnought of the class Charlemagne of the French National marine were the Charlemagne , launched in 1894 and entered in service in 1895, the Gaulois and the St Louis entered in service in 1896.
Characteristics
They were the first battleships French to adopt the fitting of two large parts of hunting and two of retirement, which had preferred the British for one decade, and a more rational Artillerie secondary, the gun S being separated by splinterproof shields. Until the Grooving plane included, which was the last vessel to be launched before Charlemagne, the French battleships were easily recognizable with their large single part at each end of a bridge higher court to minimize the effect of breath.
They were provided with two rather broad chimneys.
As on all the French ships, the belt armoured was narrow, but did not fail to stretch itself over the entire length of the hull. However, between the lower and higher edges of the cuirassage of the battery, the bulge of the wall re-entry did not have any protection. It is on this level that one found a shelter deck with the top of a splinter-deck.
The space which separates the two bridges was partitioned cellulairement in order to avoid the risks of flood in the event of damage. However this layer missed volume to avoid the progressive flooding of the building.
History
At the beginning of the First World War, this class was not regarded as powerful with the combat, but its ships were used with profit in the zones at the weak risk. The March 18th 1915, the Charlemagne and the Gaulois formed part, with the Bouvet and the Suffren , of a group of coastal Bombardement, placed under the command of the admiral Guépratte, in the Bataille of Dardanelles.
The Gaulois had been seriously damaged and was to be folded up when the Bouvet ran up against a Mine marinades. Its compartments with Munition S exploded and it disappeared in three minutes.
This same day, Irresistible the and the Ocean , of the Royal Navy, were also destroyed, which put an end to the attempt at crossing of the strait by the force.
One could not prevent the Gaulois from failing oneself. It, later, was given to flood and repaired with Toulon to be finally cast by a Torpille of Sous-marin in 1916.
The Charlemagne was withdrawn from the service in 1920.
The St Louis was reinforced in 1933.
