History

Created with the Middle Ages in a clearing in the middle of wood, the village of City-in Avray knew to preserve during the centuries the framework of greenery which, with its ponds, makes its attraction today.

City-in Avray was initially a rural and wine village. The vine, cultivated on the well exposed slopes, occupied a third of the surfaces exploited at the time of the French revolution. But the presence of the royal court with Versailles, the close city, had a decisive influence on the landscape and the inheritance of the commune. The Forêt of False-Re-fixing was maintained and crossed roads of hunting. Fountain of Roy, arranged since 1684, provides drinking water to royal family until Revolution, while the ponds were connected to the Parc of Saint-Cloud by an underground aqueduct which always remains, and supplies with water the basins and cascades of the park.

The first manservant of Louis XVI, Marc-Antoine Thierry, obtained the title of baron and became lord of City-in Avray. He made build the castle, and financed the construction of a new church, started in 1789. The baron Thierry of City-in Avray was carried by the Révolution, but its constructions remained and enriched the inheritance by the city.

City-in Avray becomes then a residential village. Many artists, painters, writers, musicians, are attracted by his charm and there come in holiday. The fabrics of Corot immortalisent the forest and the ponds, called today " ponds of Corot". The middle-class of businesses of the 19th century constitutes great properties where it comes to spend the beautiful season. These properties, not dismembered, gave rise to the current residences with their green areas.

The 20th century sees the population increasing and the village to become a city. But the cultural tradition is maintained with the presence of eminent personalities like Jean Rostand, Edouard Branly, Boris Vian, Yehudi Menuhin… Nowadays, City-in Avray remains a residential city and a cultural hearth.
