Citroen TUB

TUB (Low Utility Traction) and TUC (Traction Utility of type C) of Citroen were the light trucks derived from the Traction Before and produced by Citroen of 1939 with 1941. The TUB is the commercial first Vehicle ever equipped with a side sliding door and a floor of load low possible. Approximately 100 models were transformed by Fenwick in 1941-1942 by integrating a Electrical motor.

History

In 1935, Citroen understands that it misses in the market of the utilities, a true vehicle with front traction with a payload ranging between 500 and 850 kg to replace the utility Rosalie. For the version 500 kilos, one is satisfied to derive a commercial release from the family Traction 11 B, for the version 850 kilos the situation is quite different.

Summer 1936, Pierre-Jules Boulanger sees himself giving a thick file made up of photographs, sketch, statistics and descriptions precise of the use of these utilities in rounds of door-to-door. He comes out from this investigation that the users need a vehicle with cabin over engine in which they can be held upright and giving access to them the back since the driver's cab, a vehicle with a side door with dimensions pavement in order to facilitate the operations of loading/unloading. Fall 1937, the research department completes the first prototype rolling of a new commercial vehicle resembling nothing known. May 12th, 1939 the mines inspectorates examine a utility baptized 7-T series U carrying the chassis number 900000 and equipped with the engine TB 00032. The TUB was born, it is the innovation! It owes its name with the abbreviation of Low Utility Traction. It borrows the engine four cylinders 35 ch de la 7C (9 CV) placed in Porte-à-faux front. The frame consists of two against-bent members, the front floor is enough high to place mechanics and to allow the fitting of a cabin over engine, a floor of load low possible (threshold of loading of 42 cm) making it possible a man to be held upright (interior height of 1,75 meter), the side door is sliding, a fundamental innovation as regards light utility. The body is very simple, manufacture had been entrusted to the carriage-builder Fernand Geneva. On the two sides with the back one finds curtains in fabric of cover bored of flexible transparent matter windows. That of right-hand side is fixed at residence, that of left perhaps rolled and raised to the gutter of roof. Once the open hood one reaches the useful volume of more than 6 m ³ after having removed the dismountable back panel. The spare wheel and the battery are placed in external trunks on the left, quite accessible and without any possible contact with the goods. Mechanics is inherited the 7 CV, as well as the Gear box and the nose gear with suspension by torsion bars. The rear wheel-axle unit is of the conventional type with semi-elliptic leaf springs. Always borrowed Traction, the old Frein is entirely hydraulic with the drums with six fakes of the 11 CV. It was marketed on June 5th, 1939 at the cost of 36.000 francs. The following year, on February 13rd, 1940, the homologous mines inspectorate the 11-T series U, the first vehicle carries serial number 950.001. Although the TUB 7 CV and 11 CV have the same payload of 1020 kg, one can distinguish them because the 7 CV have one windshield wiper momentary side, one finds in bottom of the body a sheet hem symbolizing a Pare-chocs, it has two openings of filling of gasoline and the trap door of access to the battery is smooth (contrary to that of the 11 CV which is bored of four hearing). During the war, on June 23rd, 1941, appears the Type 11-T series CPU or TUC (Traction Utility of type C). Some light modifications differ it from the TUB, most important for the user, the payload passes from 1.020 kg to 1.200 kg. There also existed in version ambulance, the TAMH. Very few of these curious vehicles were sold, its diffusion limited by the war does not exceed the 2000 units. 1946, first and last Motor-show for this vehicle without hope of handing-over in manufacture, its successor the Standard H, being already ready.
