The episcopal city

Évêché the date of the 4th century. It is oldest of the VAr and the second of France after Lyon. The episcopal city is classified Historic building since 1908.

Built between Xlllè in XlVè century, the Gothic episcopal palate is rebuilt after 1838. It has a strengthened aspect:

  • In the North-East and on the bedside of the cathedral, is it “Riculphe turn” with its machicolations in very good state.
  • In south-east, is a tower who is not crenelated any more like the others. It was the place of an old vault “Saint-Andrew” with two spans of warheads of the 14th century.
In the west, the old frontage (destroyed in 1825) of the palate was to 20 m more forwards compared to the frontage of current Mairie (ocher frontage). It is materialized in the pavement and the wall of the southern frontage of the cathedral (on the right of the entry).
