Cimiez
Cimiez is one of the fashionable districts of Nice. Certain whimsical assumptions claim that the district owes its name with the extraordinary height of the trees which strewed the hill whose legend said that the summits addressed as tu the sky.
The scientific version is attested by the history pluri-millenium of the site: Cimiez was the base of the tribe of the Ligures Vediantii (Védiantiens) in IIIe-IIe front S.J. - C., the hill of Kemenelon, its Greek name (= Cemenelum) was chosen by the Emperor Auguste (in 14 av. J. - C.) for seat of the chief town of the province of the " The Alps Maritimae" (the the Alpes-Maritimes).
One finds there the Museum Henri Matisse and of the Roman ruins: arenas, the amphitheater, thermal baths and the basilica paléochrétienne.
The Nice Jazz Festival is held at the end of July in the Roman ruins of the Arènes of Cimiez and in the adjacent Oliveraie S.
In the vicinity, splendid Hôtel Regina builds for the English aristocracy and mainly for the Reine Victoria. She remained there when, on the councils of its doctor, she made her long winter visits on the French Riviera.
On the hill are also the Monastère of Cimiez and the church of the monks franciscains dating from the 16th century. The church shelters the Piéta , the Cruxifiction and the Deposition , three of major works of the medieval artist Louis Bréa.
The gardens of the monastery, very snuffed, shelter a rosery and an incomparable point of view on the city and the seaside.
The painters Henri Matisse and Raoul Dufy are buried in the cemetery of the monastery, like Roger Martin of Gard,
Nobel Prize of literature 1937. The Matisse museum is besides in the gardens of Cimiez.
