Ciba Specialty Chemicals () is a firm and chemical Swiss based with Monthey and Basle with factories in other countries of which the the United States.

History

A French, Alexandre Clavel, owner with Basle of a small dyeing, introduced in 1869 the manufacture of one of the first dyes of synthesis, the fuchsine. In 1873, the young firm is acquired by Bindschedler and Busch and forsakes its activity then first, dyeing. It is directed mainly towards the production of new basic dyes and the synthesis of the alizarin. Into 1884, it is transformed into public limit company and takes the name of Ciba " Chemische BAsel" Industry; .

After the First World War, CIBA undertakes to diversify its activities. Its research program, then from production, extends in turn to the products from technical application, pest-destroying cosmetics, products, rare metals, electronic material, chemicals for photography and with the specialities for veterinary surgeons.

In 1970, Ciba amalgamates with Geigy. The two companies work of long time in the chemical sector. The new business launches out then in the joint production of drugs and chemicals for industry and agriculture.

Ciba-Geigy markets since 1973 the Voltarène . In 1974, it buys the American firm Funk Seeds International to offer new prospects in the agricultural domain. With Alza Corp , Ciba-Geigy launches several pesticides and fungicides at the end of the Années 1970.

During the Years 1980, Ciba-Geigy consolidates its position in the market of the therapeutic treatments. One of its most known products is the Ritaline, a substance intended for the treatment of the Hyperactivité. The business practices of Ciba-Geigy to sell this drug however were disputed, in particular with the the United States where abuses regulation were denounced.

Fusion with Sandoz

In 1996, the company, which had been famous Ciba in 1992, amalgamated with Sandoz to form Novartis. The chemicals activity took its independence under the name of Ciba Specialty Chemicals (). The sites of Monthey and Basle were preserved, they constitute both of the pillars of the saving in their area.

The inhabitants of the area of Monthey still indicate the whole of the chemical plants under the name of “Ciba” in spite of the creation of Novartis.
