Christoph Schönborn

The cardinal Christoph Schönborn , o.p., was born on January 22nd, 1945 with Skalken, in the diocese of Litomerice, in Bohemia (current Czech Republic).

Resulting from the Austrian family of the counts de Schönborn, he lives in Austria as of September 1945. He studies with Schruns and Bludenz (Voralberg).

In 1963, it enters to the Dominicains. It begins its higher learning in a school of the Order with Walberberg, close to Bonn, for philosophy and theology, and with the Saulchoir in France (theology), then at the University of Vienna (philosophy and psychology), at the practical School of the High Studies, the Sorbonne (Slavic Christianity and Byzantine) and at the catholic Institute (theology), with Paris.

It is ordered priest the December 27th 1970. It obtains the license and the assistantship in theology in 1971, then the doctorate with Paris in 1974.

He is chaplain of the students with Graz of 1973 with 1975, then becomes extraordinary professor of dogmatic at the University of Freiburg (Suisse). Starting from 1978, he is auxiliary professor of Eastern Christian theology, and professor of dogmatic of 1981 with 1991.

It is also called in various commissions of experts: theological commission of the Swiss Episcopal conference (1980 - 1991), Swiss commission on the dialog between orthodoxe and catholic (1980 - 1987), commission on the dialog between roman catholics and other Christians (1980 - 1984).

But especially, he is Member of the international theological Commission starting from 1980 and of the Foundation Pro Directs, since 1984.

He assumes the responsibility for secretary of the commission on the drafting of the Catéchisme of the Catholic church (1987 - 1992).

Jean-Paul II names it auxiliary bishop Vienna, the July 11th 1991, then Archevêque coadjutor, the April 13rd 1995.

It succeeds the cardinal Groër as of the September 14th 1995. He preaches the spiritual exercises with the the Vatican for the Lent 1996.

He is elected president of the Austrian Episcopal conference in June 1998. He is the author of a great number of works and many interventions on the European questions. He is created cardinal by the Pape Jean-Paul II the February 21st 1998.

He was sometimes regarded as a Papabile.
