Christoph Hein

Christoph Hein is a playwright, novelist, essay writer and German translator born in 1944 in Silesia, in Heinzendorf close to Münsterberg.

Biography

Hein grew in Bad Düben, a small town in the north of Saxony, not far from Leipzig. His/her Pasteur father not being regarded by the authorities of GDR as a worker, it was not allowed his son to attend the college. The young person Christoph Hein thus attended, before the construction of the wall, a college of West Berlin. After the construction of this one in 1961, it is thus obliged to stop its studies. It will pass its baccalaureat only in 1964, using course of the evening, and will be able to study at the university only as from 1967, while occupying various employment: assembler, bookseller, boy of coffee, journalist, actor and attending the setting in scene with the Volksbühne, celebrate it Berliner alternate theater. It will occupy the function thereafter there to advise literary, before seeing played its own parts there - it wrote a score of it to date. It is devoted exclusively to the writing since 1979.

Success will come in 1982 with its novel the foreign Friend , published first of all in GDR then, under another title, in FRG. He did not contradict himself since.

Christoph Hein, which often intervened in public, is one of the German intellectuals most important of its time - and one of the first to being originating in GDR. It became in 1998 the first president of the PEN reunified German Club.
