Christmas turkey
The Christmas turkey is a dish prepared for the Réveillon of Christmas. Constituted of a Turkey stuffed, it is the dish par excellence in many countries in the world on this occasion. However, in Germany, one prefers the Oie for this occasion.
History
It always was of tradition to feast Christmas with a dish containing Volaille, primarily of the Oies, because it represented the solar bird and guaranteed the protection of the Sun to that which ate some. It is when the turkey was discovered in America and that its gastronomical interest was recognized that it was essential in Europe. Moreover, the name of turkey comes owing to the fact that the first turkeys found and brought back to Europe were baptized “hens of the Indies” by the Spaniards believing to return from the India.
