Christmas Alexandre

No5el Alexandre (January 19th 1639 with Rouen - August 21st 1724 with Paris) is a man of the church, ecclesiastical historian and theologist Jansenist French.

Its life and its work

He enters at the 15 years age the Dominican order where it is ordered priest. He teaches philosophy with the Saint-Jacob convent of Paris, then becomes in 1675 doctor in Sorbonne where he also teaches theology and the ecclesiastical right. He is named tutor of Jacques-Nicolas Colbert and is made preachings to which Louis XIV assists, which grants a pension to him.

Proclaimed Jansenist, it is exiled with Châtellerault in 1709, then private of his pension when it is opposed to the Bulle Unigenitus in 1713.

Its principal work is a vast ecclesiastical history in 26 volumes, published in Latin between 1676 with 1686 under the title Selecta historiae ecclesiasticae capita, and in loca ejusdem insignia dissertationes historicae, chronologicae, dogmaticae . Because it defended of the theses gallicanes, the work will be put at the Index by the pope Innocent XI. He is the author also of a history of the Old Testament in eight volumes, Selecta historiae Veteris Testamenti capita , appeared in 1689 and of a theological treaty in ten volumes, Theologia dogmatica and moralis secundum ordinem catechismi concilii Tridentini , of inspiration thomist, published in 1694.

In 1700, it publishes a work entitled Conformité of the Chinese ceremonies with the Greek and Roman idolatry as well as a series of seven Lettres on the ceremonies of China , where it takes the defense of Dominican in what one called the “Querelle of the Rites”, which opposes Dominican missionaries and Jesuits about the Confucianism.
