Cluses is a Chef-lieu of canton of Haute-Savoie. Its inhabitants are called Clusiens . It is located in the Vallée of Arve on the river of the same name (the Arve). Principal industry is the Décolletage.

History

Cluses becomes independent city the May 4th 1310. The baron Hugues de Faucigny creates a charter of frankness with the clusiens. Four syndics are elected by the population. Rights are granted to him.

Strong of its history, Cluses shelters the museum of the Clock industry and the Undercutting, located at space Carpano and Pons, at the edge of the Arve.

Every 13 years last Sunday of June takes place the Festival of the musics of Faucigny, in the honor of François Curt. This festival turns on 13 cities of Faucigny: Cluses, Bonneville, Sallanches, Passy, Megève, Chamonix, Taninges, Samoëns, Saint-Jeoire-in-Faucigny, Cruseilles, Scionzier, the Roche-sur-Foron, Saint-Gervais-the-Baths. Each year a city accommodates this festival. The last edition goes back to June 2000 and took place with Cluses.

Each year at the beginning of July proceeds the festival of current musics: Musics in Stock. This great festival proceeds in the center of the city, accommodates nearly 25000 spectators and is entirely free. Many national and international artists pressed the scene of the festival: The Stranglers, DEUS, Stephan Eicher, Mickey 3D, Come, Kill the Young, Emilie Simon, Sanseverino, Soulwax…

In November, is held the living room of the Book clusien: Esperluette. It receives many local and national authors over 2 days. As it is the practice with Cluses, the living room is free access.

At the end of 2006, was born a new demonstration, also free: Cluses O' Clock, demonstration around time and of the clock industry. On the spot: teaching workshops for children and adults, of the conferences and a clock making purse.

Places and monuments

the bridge Vieux is classified historic building. It spans the Arve on the level of the beginning of the geographical Cluse. This bridge was the only one to span the Arve during centuries. The first old bridge was built at the time of the Romans then rebuilt to the Middle Ages.
current the Lycée Charles Poncet sheltered in its buildings the Royal Ecole of Clock industry (between 1880 and the Sixties) become National school of Clock industry in 1886. It is at the end of XX^ème century that the college general practitioner and technological is born in these places.
the town of Cluses is surrounded by mountains having some curiosities such as the point of Chevran, presenting a panorama on the valley or has cascade of Englennaz, only cascade on the territory of the Cluses.
