Chevrolet Camaro

The Chevrolet Camaro is a Pony Because builds by General Motors of 1967 to 2002 in four generations and whose production will begin again in a fifth about 2009. Camaro was built to compete with the Ford Mustang. When Ford presented its Mustang in April 1964, the state major of General Motors was not really shown not impressed. They all was persuaded which there did not exist of market for this type of vehicle and which with its " petit" half-compartment, Ford, the rival of always would sink towards disasters intended. Their hopes were of short duration. Four months only after its launching, 100000 Mustang had left the production lines. Environment with the directory of General Motors was degraded considerably. It was necessary for them to better do and especially very quickly to find their first place on the national market. In the urgency, Chevrolet creates project XP836 called " Panther". Its very pure lines free from any ornament harmoniously combined volumes and roundnesses with more angular elements, a little with the image of the most prestigious Italian productions. The name Camaro would come from a deformation of the French word " Camarade".

First Generation

1969

Much change on the body in 1969. Only the cap and the trunk remain identical. The new style gave a better impression of aérodynamisme, with its trails with the top of the arcs of wheels. Package RS gave access to headlights hidden under a striated plate. There exists a great debate between the collectors followers of the style 1967-1968 and those of Camaro 1969. This year, it is Camaro RS/SS convertible which was used as Pace Because in Indianapolis. Z-28 could have a cap curvature in option. V8 307ci (a block of 283ci with a crankshaft of 327) of 200cv is developed for basic Camaro. New V8 350ci of 255cv replaced V8 327ci 275cv. When with the engine of the SS350, it was " boosté" with 300cv. For a better competitiveness in race Trans Am, the option RPO JL8 leaves in medium year. They were four disc brakes. The system was the same one as that used on the Corvette. Another possibility for the amateurs of ultimate performance, package ZL1 especially designed for the race of dragsters NHLA. The engine was V8 427ci entirely out of aluminum developing 425cv officially but semi-officially close to 500cv, which makes of it the most powerful engine ever proposed by Chevrolet. This car cost practically the double of the price of Camaro SS396, that is to say $7200 of the time… the engine alone costing $4160. To use them in race, Chevrolet was to sell 50 of them, they sold 69 Camaro and two Corvette been driven by this engine. At least 12 engines were withdrawn from these cars, and 30 of them returned to Chevrolet.

1970-1981

It became larger. the basic engine was one 6 cylinders. Side of the 8 cylinders, there was a very large variety of cubic capacities going from the 455 cubic inches to the 267 cubic inches. This variety is due to the crisis of oil and the new standards Antipollution making fall the cubic capacity of the engines in America.

1982-1992

Become again smaller, their motorizations basic was one 4 cylinders, but little were sold with this engine, the v6 being more popular and the more muscular versions are Z-28 or Iroc-z were propelled by V8 of 5.0 liters of 220 horses or 5.7 liters 245 horses for the TPI of 1992.

It should be noted that a version Organizes, recognizable for the code option B4C, also available, was only reserved to the police force. These Camaro " Package" organizes; find themselves today on the second-hand market. More powerful than Camaro " standard" , they are very required today by the amateurs of the model.

1993-2002

Always built with Boisbriand with the Quebec, the 4 cylinders of Camaro was abandoned. The basic engine one 6 cylinders of 3.4L with 160hp and was replaced into 95 by a v6 3.8L of 200hp much more economic. The more muscular versions is the z28 and the S was entitled to the engine 5.7 liters LT1, with the automatic or manual Boîte T56 with 6 reports/ratios. Z28 touched the 275hp and the S the 305hp. In 98 Camaro have right has some modifications on the level of the headlights and a replanning of the complete front as well as the interior. The obsolete cast iron LT1 will make place has a new aluminum engine, that is to say the LS1 which equipped already the Corvette. An engine very out of aluminum with a possibility of modifications much more interesting than its predecessor. Camaro Z28 will then develop 305hp and in 2000 thanks to a replacement of the intake manifold for that of engine LS6, it will increase with 325hp. Camaro S will touch the 325hp and then in 2000 until its stop of 335hp production. Several " factory freak" will leave the factory with engines exceeding the 345hp to 360hp. With its 0-100 km/h in 5.3 seconds and to see even a little less, Camaro was by far the American car most powerful (natural engine with aspiration) for its price compared to its large rival. Although it was F-Body most powerful all confused generations, the slowness of GM to adapt its car to the market will be fatal for him. In 2002 some last models will leave the late factory.

2006 with today

Chevrolet decided to revive the flame of Camaro in 2006 by presenting the Chevrolet Camaro Concept, which should make its official appearance in 2009.

Presented on the platform Zeta and equipped with engine LS2 V8 of 6,0 liters 423 HP, as well as a manual transmission with 6 reports/ratios, it would be also offered in version 6 cylinders to lower costs. Camaro Concept would be also available in a convertible version. Let us bet that this new model will make some dream more one!

The Chevrolet Camaro Concept is incarnated by the robot Autobots called Bumblebee in the film Transformers .
