Chatt-el-Arab
The Chatt-el-Arab (شطالعرب) or Chott-el-Arab or Arvandrud (called اروندرود: arvandrūd in Persan) is the common Estuaire Tigre and Euphrate. It leads to the Persian Gulf after a course of 200 km.
On part of this course, the medium of the river is the border between the Iran and the Iraq. On its banks several ports accessible to the ocean liners are, of which, Iraqi side, Al Basra, second town of Iraq, and FAO, deep water port located at the outlet on the Persian Gulf, and, Iranian side, Khorramshahr and especially Abadan, known for its immense refinery.
Chatt-el-Arab was the stake of the war between Iran and Iraq between 1980 and 1988.
